Three Uber taxi cars damaged, driver injured at Menamkulam

The Kazhakoottam police arrested a localite Suraj, 25, in connection with the incident.

Thiruvananthapuram: In a deviation from the usual isolated attacks, three Uber taxi cars were damaged and a driver was injured by auto-taxi workers at Menamkulam on Friday night. The Kazhakoottam police arrested a localite Suraj, 25, in connection with the incident.

As per the complaints registered by three taxi drivers, Sreeraj, Shahnavas and Mohammad Haneefa, their cars were waylaid and attacked by two motorcycle-borne hooligans near Confident group’s flat around 9.30 p.m. The windshield and body parts were broken and dented with bricks.

Earlier this week, a Uber taxi driver was manhandled by local taxi drivers on Thiruvananthapuram railway station premises. In the last three months, eight FIRs have been registered in various city police stations in connection with attack on Uber drivers.

“Attacks previously happened near certain places such as airport, Technopark and Menamkulam. However, multiple taxis are being targeted together for the first time. We are in touch with DCP and commissioner and a meeting has been scheduled on Monday,” said Mr Nitin Nair, general manager, Uber, Kerala.

As per officials, the attacks on online taxi service providers have stopped in Kochi after a recent High Court order but the violence on the drivers continues in the capital.
