Eye surgeries part of national scheme
Adilabad: Medical and health principal secretary A. Shanti Kumari said that the botched cataract operations on some elderly persons at the private Jaya Hospital in Warangal were not related to state government’s Kanti Velugu programme. She said that the operations were being performed under the National Blindness Control Programme (NBCP). Dr Kumari said there was confusion as both Kanti Velugu and National Blindness Control Programmes are going on simultaneously.
“Patients who faced eye sight related problems after surgery were shifted to L V Prasad eye hospital in Hyderabad and re-surgeries have been done. The patients are stable now,” Dr Kumari said.
Speaking to mediapersons in Adilabad, Ms Kumari said that state government would initiate action against Jaya hospital for their negligence in performing cataract operations. The district medical and health officer had inspected the hospital and an inquiry is on, she said.
She said that the government would start cataract surgeries after three months under Kanti Velugu after completing secondary and tertiary care measures. Screening tests are currently going on and patients are being given spectacles.
