Kochi: KSU and Youth Congress activists on Thursday held a protest march to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) demanding action against those who allegedly ragged Mohammed Sherin, leading to his attempt at suicide. Police used force to disperse the activists and five of them were injured in the action. They were admitted to hospitals in Kalamassery. The activists were assured by the Vice-Chancellor Dr J Letha that based on the written complaint by Mr Sherin, action can be taken against those pointed as indulging in ragging.

She also told them that on the violent incidents that took on the Cusat hostel premises involving KSU and SFI activists on Septmeber 22, action would be taken based on the CCTV visuals. Meanwhile SFI Cusat unit secretariat member T P JIbin said that Cusat hostels are free from ragging while it takes place on the campus. He said that the registrar of the varsity has not been taking stern action on such issues on the campus being instigated by students who marijuana.

“There is a group called Malabaris which has members of KSU and MSF who create trouble on the campus. The cousin of Sherin, Fazal M K who is a senior student on the campus is a member of it. He is among the seven members still at large over the clashes held on September 22 over the freshers day celebrations on the campus. The drama of attempted suicide by Sherin was enacted to divert attention from this and save these persons,” said Jibin. He said that the current incidents started from the attack on woman volunteer that took place during Onam celebrations organised by the Cusat union led by the SFI.
