Dilapidated building in Kancharaveedhi of Vizag city collapses, family safe

Town Planning officials of the GVMC informed that the shaky building collapsed following the heavy rains over the last few days.

Visakhapatnam: A dilapidated old building in Kancharaveedhi of Vizag city, collapsed on Thursday.

Town Planning officials of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation informed that the shaky building collapsed following the heavy rains over the last few days. But no casualties were reported as the room where the family was living didn’t collapsed.

The family of Maripilli Hema Sundaram had a miraculous escape on Wednesday night when the 70-year-old building collapsed due to rains and the neighbours immediately rescued them.

Due to the continuous rains, the dilapidated buildings are posing an additional threat to the lives of the occupants and the passers-by too.

Even though the GVMC has been identifying the unsafe buildings every year and slapping notices on the owners to renovate, if the structural soundness is okay, or demolish, many turn a deaf ear due to either lack of financial means or emotional attachment with these houses.

The shabby buildings are mainly concentrated around One Town area and Poorna Market.

GVMC officials said they have identified about 320 dilapidated buildings and are going to issue notices to the owners.

“We are lucky that the room in which we were sleeping was intact and didn’t collapse. Thanks to neighbours who had rescued us,” said Hema Sundaram.
