Kozhikode: The alumni of St. Philomena’s LP School, Marikkunnu, here is on a mission to revive the school which is under the threat of closure. The school that had 100 to 120 students a few years ago has just two students now. The alumni association of the school has called a special meeting on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi Day) to discuss revival of the school which was founded in 1943, with three teachers.
Vinod Krishnan, one of the organisers of the programme, told DC that everyone in his neighborhood had their early education in St. Philomena’s. “The school, run by the Church, had four divisions, each with 30 - 40 students”, he added. “It was to this school, in the late sixties, that I, like the children in my neighborhood, walked barefoot in the monsoons, often under one umbrella with two friends on my left and right!!
How we all enjoyed sitting wet in the classroom!!”, reminisces Mr Krishnan, who is sad about the present situation. “We are trying to bring in a maximum number of alumni and people’s representatives of the region to the programme”, Vinod Krishnan, said.
