Bharathidasan University cancels meet on new education policy

This circular caused a tense situation among the University\'s faculty members and the students.

TIRUCHY: The Bharathidasan University (BU) at Tiruchy abruptly canceled a meeting slated for this evening here to discuss the national new education policy (NEP) in which Tamil Nadu Governor's private secretary Sri Rajagopal was listed as one of the speakers along with deans and professors (BU).

Highly placed University sources told DC that BU Registrar Mr. Gopinath sent a circular in this regard on Wednesday to concerned and asked them to attend the meeting, in neat formal attire without fail. This circular caused a tense situation among the University's faculty members and the students.

All of sudden, the University authorities announced that the visit of the Governor's private secretary was cancelled. The announcement eased the tense situation on campus, sources said.

Sources at the Association of University Teachers (AUT) said so far no private secretary to the Governor has attended such meetings in any university in Tamil Nadu. They took strong exception over the university's circular, asking faculty members to wear clean clothes and said it was an insult to the faculty members and did not accord with the University's stature. (Palkazaikazhaga Maanbukku Uganthathalla).

They also pointed out that the AUT made several attempts to meet the Tamil Nadu Governor to represent to him about the problems faced by the University, but such attempts were in vain. However, they welcomed the event cancellation.
