Low pressure, depression made up deficit rainfall in AP

Krishna, Vizag received excess rainfall

VISAKHAPATNAM: The recent low pressure followed by a depression in the northwest Bay of Bengal which brought plenty of showers, made up the rainfall deficit of Andhra Pradesh as of date. The deficit is now only 3 per cent, according to an IMD report issued on Saturday.

The report said Andhra Pradesh received 210.2 mm rainfall between June 1 and July 29 which is just 3 per cent less than the normal rainfall of 217mm.

On July 24, 13 districts, including seven coastal and six Rayalaseema districts of the total 26 districts of Andhra Pradesh recorded deficient to large deficient (8 per cent to 50 per cent deficient) rainfall while 11 districts in the state recorded normal rainfall and two districts (ASR and Krishna) recorded excess rainfall.

Krishna district received 75 per cent excess over normal rainfall followed by Visakhapatnam at 45 per cent.

Now, on July 29, only four districts-Nellore, Annamayya, Tirupati and YSR Kadapa districts recorded deficit rainfall.

Director of IMD-Amaravati, Stella S, said that the recent rains have improved the rainfall scenario in many districts in the state. The rain deficit was recorded at 37 per cent by June 30 (AP received 59.2 mm rainfall against the normal 94.1 mm) and came down to 22 per cent by July 24 and now it came down to a 3 per cent deficit. Parts of the state will experience light rainfall in the coming days, she added.

The recent heavy rains pushed the farming activities in many parts of the state. Srikakulam district in north coastal Andhra Pradesh is one of the highest paddy-growing districts in the state, the officials said.
