Suspended Kozhikode MP M K Raghavan feted for Lok Sabha action'

The MPs would have to remain out of the lower House for the whole of this week.

KOZHIKODE: Rarely the ‘suspensions’ are celebrated. However, Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan getting suspended along with five other Congress lawmakers for reacting against disallowing a discussion on cow vigilantism in Lok Sabha is an exemption. Historian M.G.S. Narayanan and writer and social critic M.N. Karassery praised the timely action of the MP at the reception for the MP the District Congress Committee organised on Saturday. “There are instances in the country where confusions are deliberately created, and we should think of a way out of the issue,” said the eminent historian who had headed the Indian Council of Historical Research during the previous NDA dispensation.

“Congress is the only democratic and secular party now available to fight the fascist elements dominating in the country. The Leftists in India are in the clutches of the Marxists, and they cannot save the country. But family politics is suicidal for the Congress.” Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday suspended six Congress MPs for five consecutive sittings for improper conduct after they tore up papers and threw them at her. The MPs would have to remain out of the lower House for the whole of this week. During Zero Hour, as the Congress MPs were protesting demanding a discussion on attacks on Dalits and Muslims by cow vigilantes, they tore up the papers and threw them in the air and towards the Speaker’s podium.

“Even the concept of India would disappear, once Congress loses their importance in the country,” Mr Karassery said, referring to the Congress-mukt Bharat campaign of the BJP. “I am a critic of the Congress, but my request to the party workers is that you all should come forward to strengthen it for the good of the country. The situation in India is worse than during the Emergency when only the police were attacking. But now, any mob is ready to attack the common man,” he said.

Mr Raghavan said that the behaviour of the Speaker was partial in the Parliament. “While just warning the BJP MP for recording the procedures, the Speaker expelled one AAP member for the same reason. The first speech of the President is an indication of where the nation is leading to,” the MP said assuring that the fight against fascist elements would continue. The event was presided over by DCC president T. Siddique.
