SW monsoon sets in, parts of TN get showers; sea turns rough
Chennai: With the onset of southwest monsoon, southern parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed rain and the sea was found rough in Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari districts.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Tuesday announced the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala, three days ahead of its normal date. It has advanced into most parts of Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu. The northern limits of monsoon passes through Coimbatore, Kodaikanal and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.
Particularly in Pamban, Dhanushkodi, Rameswaram and Thangachimalai, sea erosion and high tides due to rough winds were noted.
Owing to this, tourists were asked not to take joy rides in the sea and local fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea by RMC. Also, train operations along the Pamban bridge were undertaken cautiously due to high tide activity.
Meanwhile, Western Tamil Nadu received intermittent rains in catchment areas of Periyar, Kodaikanal and Palani.
Western districts located along the tiger reserves of Tamil Nadu also received copious inflow into the reservoirs.
Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris recorded good rainfall on Tuesday affecting traffic flow. Tourists visiting Nilgiris found it difficult to reach their picnic spots as most of the arterial roads were waterlogged.
While the rain brought respite for the state, northern Tamil Nadu comprising of Vellore, Chennai and Tiruvallur recorded temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, causing inconvenience to the public.
Till Wednesday night, the sky condition in Chennai is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 38 degree Celsius and 28 degree Celsius.
