Councillor C P Fathima sets Samaritan example
KOZHIKODE: In the time of drought, C.P Fathima, IUML councillor at Payyoli Municipality is setting a shining example. She has provided her own well for drinking water distribution and more than 25,000 litres of water is being drawn daily. Her house at Perumalpuram in Payyoli keeps its gates open round the clock these days as tanker lorries start reaching from 4 am daily. “I have only one condition. The water drawn from my household should not be sold. It is exclusively for those who lack drinking water,” she told DC. Bekkar Thikodi, an expat active in social service, is drawing 16,000 litres of water every day to distribute it in drought hit Payyoli, Thikodi, Pallikkara, Thachankunnu, Thurasserikadavu among other places.
Similarly, the JD (U) local committee is drawing 8,000 litres of water to distribute for common public. The curious thing is that Payyoli Municipality has not yet commenced its drinking water distribution. “I came to know that my well has so much water by sheer accident. I once switched on the motor at 9 am and went out forgetting to switch it off. When I came in the evening, the entire compound was like a pond. The water quantity in my well surprised me and I thought of providing it to the people,” she explained. It is one month since people and various groups began drawing water from the well and it has not fallen short. Mrs Fathima is not also charging for the power to pump the water. The borewell at her house was dug 16 years back.
