Rao's blood sugar levels had reportedly dropped while driving, which led to his losing control of the vehicle, resulting in the accident, police said.

Chennai: A 42-year-old man on a bicycle was killed after a trailing SUV hit him from behind near Anna Nagar on Monday evening. Police said that the car was being driven by a retired Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official, Hanumanth Rao (70). Rao’s blood sugar levels had reportedly dropped while driving, which led to his losing control of the vehicle, resulting in the accident, police said.

The deceased was identified as Mothi, an electrician and a resident of T P Chattiram. He was riding his bicycle along Halls road when the accident happened around 1 pm, police said. Preliminary investigations revealed that Rao, who has been a diabetic for the past two decades, forgot to take his dose of insulin in the morning leading to a drop in his blood sugar levels.

The car hit the bicycle and ran over the man before hitting the sidewalk coming to a halt. Passersby rushed to the rescue and moved both the cyclist and the car driver to the hospital. The cyclist was declared brought dead at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital while the septuagenarian is undergoing treatment.
The car was registered in the name of Rao’s son, Srinivasan, a doctor, police said. The deceased is survived by his wife and two school going children. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
