Have no plans to be CM: Rishi Raj

Jail DGP at summer vacation programme Punarjani'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To all those who were curious about the political ambitions of DGP (Prisons) Rishi Raj Singh, he has made his stand clear and indicated that he has no intention to be the chief minister of Kerala. At the summer vacation programme ‘Punarjani,’ organised at Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, the first question posed to him went thus: “Recently actor Srinivasan said that you would be ideal for the post of chief minister. What do you have to say about that?” Without an inkling of a smile, he said, “I take it as a joke that the actor cracked.”

When asked about Malayalam movies which he liked, he talked about Jayaraj’s ‘Ottal’ which is about child labour. “There is a reason why I bring this movie up. You all are fortunate that your parents are sending you to school. Over 10 crore children in India are not that lucky,” he said. Rishi Raj Singh said that perhaps they can make arrangements for the children to see the movie.

At the same time, when a child asked whether they would be allowed to take a tour of the jail, he said that children should rather visit museums and parks.
Such summer camps would not have been necessary a decade or two ago, he said. Schools invested little time in extracurricular activities like reading, sports or arts, he said and added that 70 percent of schools in Kerala did not have a playground. There was little that elicited a smile from the police officer. Then again, the questions seemed to be too grave to have come from children.
