Krishnagiri: Police in Tamil Nadu have registered a case against a woman who allegedly spread misinformation on WhatsApp that her neighbours have tested positive for COVID-19 and should therefore be avoided.

The subject of the rumour, S. Lakshmi (40) of Vannathipatti village in Krishnagiri district, filed a police complaint against her neighbour, M. Govinda Amma (41) for spreading the false news about her.

Police of Anchetti taluka are looking for Govinda Amma, who is on the run.

Govinda Amma faces charges under sections 188 IPC (disobedience of order promulgated by a public servant), 509 IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and section 67 of the IT Act (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene materials in electronic media).
