K Muraleedharan plans to checkmate Ramesh Chennithala

Mr Muraleedharan told DC, though modestly, that he was one of the most sought-after leaders because he was vocal on issues.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The late K Karunakaran’s son, K Muraleedharan, MLA, has revived the campaign for I group regrouping, sending shivers down the Chennithala camp. And he enjoys former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s blessings in his outing. Ever since Mr Muraleedharan had voiced his ire at the KPCC leadership for the practice of the top trio being the final arbiter on Congress affairs in the State, a change has come in the party fold.

When the Political Affairs Committee was not convened due to Mr Chandy’s noncooperation, Mr Muraleedharan demanded that the meeting be called regularly. This forced PCC chief V. M. Sudheeran to propose the PAC every second Saturday. Mr Muraleedharan, otherwise confined to Vattiyoorkavu constituency, has been touring the State, of late. There are unconfirmed reports that he convened a meeting of Karunakaran loyalists at his niece’s house behind Cliff House on Sunday. Mr Muraleedharan told DC, though modestly, that he was one of the most sought-after leaders because he was vocal on issues.

“I have been actively touring the State for several weeks. I addressed public programmes in Kannur, Kottayam and Kollam where I got a rousing reception. But I have not called any group meeting. I have been interacting with a cross-section of Congress leaders to strengthen the party”, said Mr Muraleedharan. Karunakaran loyalists have been upset with Mr Chennithala as they allege that the former third group has been walking away with party positions. But a top ‘A’ group leader told DC that even Mr Chennithala’s former trusted lieutenant, Mr K. Sudhakaran, has veered off.
