15 lakh EB consumers have linked Aadhaar

Chennai: Over 15 lakh consumers in the State had already linked their Aadhaar card with their electricity connections and people had been given enough time till December 31 to complete the formality from any of the 2811 offices where special camps were being conducted, State Minister for Power V Senthilbalaji said.

After inspecting the functioning of a special camp at a TANGEDCO collection centre in Chennai, where a special camp for linking Aadhaar was on, the Minister said on Monday that the speed of the server through which the linking was done would be enhanced to help consumers.

The working of the special camps in the collection centres would not hamper the payment of electricity bills by consumers as special counters had been opened and elaborate arrangements would be made at the special camps, he said.

Dispelling fears spread through the media and other sources of people likely to lose some benefits that they would be availing now, Senthilbalaji said that nothing like that would happen and even if a consumer had multiple power connections none of subsidies or privileges would be cut.

Of the total 2.33 crore connections, the electricity board had data of only 1.15 consumers and the ongoing exercise to link the Aadhaar with the power connection was to collect data on the number of tenants, house owners and those having multiple connections.

Once the Aadhaar was linked with the power connection, the consumer would be intimated about it through an SMS, he added
