Metro Rail remains a dream for Old City

In 2008, the state announced that a 5.6 km Metro track would connect Falaknuma to MGBS via Charminar, but it failed to fulfil its promise

HYDERABAD: Four years have passed since the first Hyderabad Metro Rail chugged from Miyapur in November 2017. However, commuters from the Old City, who hoped that the Metro Rail would take them to their destinations faster, are a disappointed lot as it is yet to take wings in their area.

In 2008, the state government announced that a 5.6 km Metro track would connect Falaknuma to MGBS via Charminar, but it has failed to fulfil its promise. Their dream was shattered when the Metro track was laid via Malakpet and New Malakpet towards Nagole-Raidurgam, leaving the metro services out of bound for people of main areas of Old City.

“I pay all taxes on time. Even people in our area are prompt in paying bills and taxes. As far as I know, the Old City residents give more revenue to the government when compared to the new city. Then why is the government showing partiality,” Syed Abdul Abbas, a retired forest department official who resides in Falaknuma said.

“I once travelled in the metro from Balkampet to MJ Market. Had a great experience and due to no traffic jams, I could save my time. I am eagerly waiting for the metro train to start services from the Old City,” Mohammed Irfan, a student and resident of Rein Bazaar said.

Another resident Mohammed Mansoor of Shalibanda said, “It’s a shame on part of the government to neglect residents of the Old City. Travelling in the metro will only be a dream for us.”

"As far as I know, there is no work initiated in the Old City,” Mohammed Wasayuddin, AIMIM corporator from Rein Bazaar told Deccan Chronicle. “We are ready to cooperate with the government following the instructions of Asad sahab," he said,

AIMIM corporator from Kurmagguda Mohammed Shifat and Sameena from Moghalpura also said they had not been informed of any such project in the Old City.
