Kerala to benefit maximum from GST

The GST is scheduled to be implemented across the country from April 1, 2017.

Kochi: Kerala is likely to largely benefit from the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax in the country, said Sachin Menon, Partner and Head (Indirect Tax) KPMG a consultancy organisation. “Kerala being one of the highest consuming states, it will be one of the largest beneficiaries of the introduction of GST”, he said addressing a workshop on GST and its implications organised by FICCI. Mr. Menon also said GST will improve the finances of the state significantly and added that Kerala is one of the most vocal states in the GST council.

The implementation of GST will help trade and industry and there is no need to have any room of concern about its implementation, said Pullela Nageswara Rao, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax, Kerala. The implementation of GST will also lead to change organisations such as Central Excise into facilitation agency from enforcement agency, he added.

The GST is scheduled to be implemented across the country from April 1, 2017. It replaces all indirect taxes levied on goods and services by the Centre and states, making for a single taxation system. There are 60,000 Central Excise and Customs and state government officers who will be trained for the switch to GST, according to official sources.
