Anti-BJP platform to gain traction

The CPM's updated party programme had called for exposing this fascistic RSS project.

THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: The ongoing debate on broader anti-BJP and anti fascist platform is set to gain traction during the organisational conferences of CPM which are underway across the country. The party believes that the BJP led government at the Centre was brazenly going ahead with advancing the fascistic RSS project in the country. Under these circumstances the Narendra Modi government can no longer be described as authoritarian alone.

The CPM’s updated party programme had called for exposing this fascistic RSS project. It had pointed out that the rise of the communal and fascistic RSS-combine and its assuming power at the Centre had increased the threat to the secular foundations of the nation like never before. The party had also referred to the danger of fascist trends based on religious communalism gaining ground especially in the run up to 2019 polls. These trends had to be fought at all levels. After the branch conferences, the party is set for a serious discussion on the question of firming up a broad secular democratic platform to take on the BJP and its fascist designs. While a section of party leadership is opposed to taking Congress on board, another view is that the party which has pan India presence must have some role in this fight.

Many say that both the BJP and the Congress cannot be treated equally at this juncture. The CPM central committee meeting scheduled to be held in October may outline the party’s perspective on the fight against fascist forces. The meeting is also set to discuss the fresh political tactical line along with the draft political resolution. While the party is unlikely to make any changes to the tactical line adopted in Vishakhapatnam of not not having any electoral understanding with the Congress, there is possibility for joint struggles with non BJP parties on issues like cow vigilantism, growing intolerance, attacks on Dalits, tribal and minorities, undermining constitutional institutions and polarisation creating a divide on religious lines.
