Chennai corporation violates model code of conduct: DMK councillor
Chennai: Chennai corporation has earned the wrath of Opposition political functionaries in north Chennai as several roads are now getting spruced up and relaid at a time when the state election commission has sounded model code of conduct, under which no new projects can be commenced.
“Corporation officials were sleeping in my ward for some time and there was no relaying of roads or repairs after April, but suddenly faulty streetlights are attended, roads are repaired and backlog of garbage is cleared,” said a DMK councillor in Central Chennai.
“I am contesting again for October 19 polls and if I block the road repair work it will affect my vote bank and I am just watching the model code violation,” he added.
When contacted, city corporation deputy commissioner (works) K.S. Kandasamy denied that there was any model code violation.
“These are all projects for which tenders were floated at least three months ago. The work orders were issued last month. There is no ban for any ongoing projects. September is a crucial month for the corporation as the civic body has to complete road repair and storm water works before the monsoon,” the official said.
According to corporation sources, the civic body has planned to relay 8,500 roads in the current fiscal and more than 60 per cent of these roads have been laid.
