A noble gesture in the time of crisis
Kozhikode: The floods not only damaged houses, furniture and many other essential goods, but also took away books of hundreds of students.
With this thought in mind, the NSS unit of Govt. Sarvajana Higher Secondary School, Sulthan Bathery has come up with a novel and varied initiative by making notebooks from unused pages of used books.
The group already had made 400 notebooks from unused pages of used books to be distributed to students at flood-affected areas.
According to the volunteers, this initiative will indirectly help in minimising the number of trees being cut for the purpose of manufacturing writing books.
As part of the ‘Save Paper Save Trees campaign, the volunteers collected 50,000 unused pages, in cooperation with GHSS Moolankavu, from the thrown out notebooks of students from nearby schools and made 400 notebooks within a week's time.
The volunteers are currently focused on reaching out to as many communities and schools as possible. Aiming for success, they hope to use their experience from the first leg of the project to improve their next attempt.
The volunteers hope that this would be a helping hand to those who lost their books in the flood.
School PTA, non teaching staff and teachers also came forward extending their support to the NSS team here.
All volunteers in the unit had also engaged in flood relief operations in areas of Kottathara, a hamlet near Kalpetta, and nearby places by providing food materials and dresses when these places were marooned by the torrential rains.
