Sensitise people to save energy, officials told

Collector RV Karnan said officials must create awareness among students about how power is produced and how people can use it judiciously

Karimnagar: A plea to save power and reduce carbon emissions along with giving priority for renewable energy sources to benefit future generations was made here on Thursday.

District collector RV Karnan was addressing an event got up as part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav under the directions of the Union Ministry of Power and NTPC in association with TSGENCO. It was conceived as a celebration of the ‘Ujwal Bharat Ujwal Bavishya-power @ 2047 initiative’, held at the collectorate.

Karnan said the power production was 6,000 megawatts before the formation of Telangana state. This has been enhanced to around 16,300 megawatts.

He said officials must create awareness among students about how power is produced and how people can use it in a judicious manner.

Manager of the NTPC, Alok Tagore, said that before India got independence, power production was 1,300mw, which increased to around 403 gigawatts (4 lakh mega watts) in 75 years. By 2030, it would reach around 500 giga watts.

The superintendent of electricity department, Gangadhar, said TS was in darkness before its formation. It was able to supply power 24 hours for all sections now. The government provided one lakh electricity connections to the agriculture sector, he said.

Nodal officer Prem Reddy, Somla Bhukya, DEs and AEs of electricity department were present along with students of KITS and WITS engineering colleges.
