Minister K T Jaleel faults talk by retired cops

The minister said that it was not right for retired police officers to rake up communal thoughts once they demit office.

KOZHIKODE: Without naming any police officer, local self government minister K.T. Jaleel and ADGP Tomin Thachankary, protested retired police officers trying to be in limelight by making controversial statements. They were addressing the state conference of Kerala Police Officers Association here on Friday. The minister said that it was not right for retired police officers to rake up communal thoughts once they demit office.

“The retired cops should abstain from making controversial statements because public has interest in listening to what they have got to say,” he said. Mr Thachankary said pension to retired personnel was intended at keeping a good relationship with government after their retirement. “What would be fate of the country, if a General from the Indian Military decides to reveal the defense secrets, once he retires? People should not reveal the information they collect as part of their official duty. Some retired officers try to be the newsmakers and be in the limelight,” he commented.

The ADGP also alleged that many IPS officers were having more number of policemen in their security. When the number of the force is nearly 60,000 in the state, for night shifts, there are only around 1,600 on duty, he added. The conference was also attended by city police commissioner S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar. The valedictory function on Saturday will be addressed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here.
