Kerala: Congress leaders against media ban in courts

The intervention of the CM was of no use, but the situation has worsened.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran shot off a letter to Governor P. Sathasivam seeking his intervention in the ban on media in courts. He urged that a complete solution needs to be reached on the problems between the mediapersons and the lawyers. However, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan commenting that he would come out with his views on this issue later, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala ridiculed the position.

Mr Sudheeran, while speaking to reporters here alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the LDF government had failed to resolve the issue. The intervention of the CM was of no use, but the situation has worsened. Mr Sudheeran urged High Court Chief Justice, the Chief Minister, Chief Information Commissioner, editors or their representatives, bar council representatives, etc to discuss and find a solution. In the letter, Mr Sudheeran solicited that transparency should be ensured for the media to report court news.

“The CM’s decision not to react to the media is highly critical. Since the time of C. Achutha Menon, Cabinet decisions were briefed after the weekly Cabinet meeting. I don’t know why he is not briefing. This is equal to rejecting the right of the people to know,” he said. Mr Chennithala asked if the CM is not reacting to the issue now, then when would he react.
