KOZHIKODE: The High Court on Thursday asked Calicut University to explain its stand on the recently modified eligibility criteria for PG courses. The action is based on a parent's complaint against its decision to consider marks in languages too for admissions to all the PG programmes. A section of teachers says the move to consider overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which includes marks scored for English and the second language for the admissions is an injustice.
"The students who took admission for BSc three years back were told the admission process for the PG is based on the then system of considering marks from the core and supplementary subjects. However, when they are out of the course and about to join PG, the entire system has changed. It is an injustice because the students obviously gave more importance to core and subsidiary subjects during their course," said a teacher.
"As there is only a limited number of seats for MSc Physics programme, even a small change could be detrimental to the prospects of selection." In 2012, the University gave choices to its PG Board of Studies (BOS) to choose either CGPA (marks of core and supplementary courses) or overall CGPA, which includes marks of languages.
After protests, the varsity appointed an expert committee which found the difference between both options is negligible. However, three out of the four members of expert committee were part of the BOS, which decided to implement overall CGPA.
