Science Express Expo to reach Kerala on July 1
Alappuzha: The Science Express Exhibition Climate Action Special train flagged off from New Delhi on February 17 on its latest round will reach Kerala on July 1. The 16-coach train will station at three centres in the state and will be at Kayamkulam here for four days. The exhibition launched in October has already visited 490 locations including Ernakulam, Palakkad and Changanassery during earlier rounds, attracting 1.62 crore footfalls. It offers free entry.
Exhibits of eight coaches are devoted to information, case studies and materials related to various aspects of climate change. It showcases the underlying science, impacts, mitigation solutions and policy approaches easily understandable and exciting for students and the public.
The focus is on teaching students etiquettes at school, on roads and at home besides lifestyle choices. A kids’ zone for children below Class IV has fun-filled activities, games and puzzles in science, math and environment. Since it is focusing on clean energy, three coaches are fitted with solar panels on the roofs which will produce energy directly from sunlight at the stopover spots.
The guides will make people understand the adverse effects of global warming and the means and ways to address the issue. It would be open 10 am - 5 pm. Coach 1 and 2 provide basic understanding about causes of climate change due to human activities and its adverse impacts such as the rise in temperature and sea level and monsoon variations. Coach 3 and 4 explain the adaptation strategies in rural and urban areas providing examples from fields, while the next two highlight mitigation strategies and Coach-7 the international negotiations on climate change.
Coach 8 gives tips to contribute in the process of restoration of natural balance by making simple changes in lifestyle, coaches 9 and 10 cover the themes like biotechnology for bio-resources and natural conservation, Coach 11 innovations in science and technology, science education and technological solutions. Coach-12 is for fun activities and Coach-13 for lab experiments for schoolkids.
