Chennai: With the demand for drinking water soaring with the decrease in pipeline supply by Chennai Metro Water department, residents from the tail end areas have been thronging Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in the city.
Set up under the Amma drinking water scheme and maintained by the civic body, the scheme supplies a pot of water per family, belonging to the economically backward section every day. To make the scheme accountable, smart cards were given to the people to claim water from this source.
As Metro Water recently cut down water supply in the city, agitated residents are demanding authorities at RO plants to increase water supply. On Wednesday afternoon, people from Mathakuppam, near Marina, expressed their difficulties in meeting the water demand.
"We are a family of seven people and one water can is not sufficient for us," said D. Vasuki, a resident from Mathakuppam. "RO plants are a means to get clean water. As we cannot afford to buy water cans, the civic body should increase the quantity," said Thamizh, a resident.
Corporation authorities, when contacted, said that water could only be supplied in a rationalised way so as to satisfy the minimum requirements of the people.
