Kannur model 24-hr crackdown a success: Sanjay Kumar Gurudin
KANNUR: The Kannur police are on a mission to tackle the offenders, especially traffic violators, through 24-crackdown, says Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Gurudin. On a trial basis, the police conducted their drive on Thursday and Friday last and registered 527 cases, said the SP. All the 36 police stations were part of the drive and since the experiment was a success, the 24-hour combing would continue in future also, he added.
“In total, 2,514 vehicles were checked and 527 cases registered. Non-bailable warrant was issued against 127 persons and 199 people were arrested in drunken driving case alone,” said Mr Gurudin. The Kannur police are planning to conduct such special drives frequently in the district.
As the schools opened early this month, the tobacco sellers are also targeting the students. As many as 177 cases were registered in the drive under COTPA. A total of 83 cases were registered under the Abkari Act and 17 cases under the MMDR Act. The sudden crackdowns are more effective since the violators are not vigilant. When the news of the crackdowns spread, the crimes also fall. He added that almost all the police stations in the district recorded only a few cases in the next days.
