Students back VACB drive
Thrissur: As a part of the Active Citizens Programme jointly conducted by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the British Council, the students of Sri. C.Achutha Menon Government College, conducted an anti-corruption awareness programme by meeting the residents of the adopted villages of the college’s NSS Units and the shops in the vicinity of the college the other day. As part of the 4th social action project, the residents of the adopted village and the shops on the premises of the college were taught to download the app, titled ‘Arising Kerala’ and ‘Whistle Now’, introduced by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) Kerala to tip off Vigilance officials about the corruption in society.
The volunteers of the programme demonstrated to the public during visits to their homes and shops about how to upload issues of corruption in any sector in a written or a visual format on the website of VACB. Prior to the programme, the Active Citizens were given a class on the use and installation of the app by the VACB. The programme was co-ordinated by Razeena P.R, NSS Programme Officer at the college.
The volunteers who were part of the programme told DC that they received a flurry of complaints regarding the bribe demanded by policemen during passport verification and for proper inquiry into theft cases and also about corruption in Village Offices where they needed to bribe officials to get documents in time during land purchase and land deals. It is a global programme of the British Council by joining hands with authorized agencies in different countries.
