AISF expels leader for expose
Thiruvananthapuram: Law Academy Law College AISF unit secretary Vivek Vijayagiri has been expelled from the organisation after he withdrew his petition seeking a high-level probe against former principal Lakshmi Nair for abusing him by caste. AISF district committee had sought an explanation from him for withdrawing the case. But it found his explanation unsatisfactory. Mr Vivek had mentioned that he withdrew the case with the consent of CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran. His complaint against Ms Nair had gained much media attention during the law academy strike.
Mr Rajendran who denied the allegation had stated that AISF had not withdrawn the case against her and his move was personal. Mr Vivek, a fourth-semester student of the college, had filed a complaint with the police that she had called him by caste name while he was standing in front of her office along with his four friends. Based on this complaint, the police registered a case under the stringent Sections 3(1)(i) of Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
The FIR was that Ms Nair made the remarks due to grudge over a news report on non-payment of grants to students of backward communities owing to management’s lapses. When the case came up for hearing, the counsel for the complainant informed the bench that he had withdrawn his complaint and did not intend to take the matter any further. He requested to quash further proceedings against her. However, the court opined that such a demand is not possible on the current petition and asked to file an amended petition.
