Kerala Motor Vehicles Department checks 108 school buses; finds 12 unfit

An awareness programme for the school bus/van employees was also held along with the programme.

KOZHIKODE: The Motor Vehicles Department here checked 108 school buses on Saturday, prior to the start of the new academic year. Twelve vehicles were found unfit and denied stickers. The MVD and the police department have jointly taken steps to ensure the safety and security of students by launching pre-monsoon school vehicle checking on Saturday and Sunday.

“The school buses were denied quality stickers after finding faulty tyres, brakes, brake lights etc. The rexine materials on the seats were also damaged in some of the vehicles. The rest of the vehicles will be checked on Sunday,” said MVI Manayath Prakasan, who conducted the checking along with AMVI U.T. Muhad on Chevayur ground.

The school buses that come under Educational Institution Bus (EIB) section were checked and stickers were provided to the qualified ones. Those which received the stickers will not be stopped by police during further checking, said the MVI.

An awareness programme for the school bus/van employees was also held along with the programme. The classes were led by AMVIs Shaji, Nissar, Viju and Prajeesh. School buses from Kozhikode town, Feroke, Nallalam, Panniyankara, Chemmangad, Beypore, Kasaba, Nadakkavu and Vellayil attended the checking on Saturday. Those from Chevayur, Medical College, Elathur and Mavoor should attend it on Sunday.
