Kunnathunad MLA Anwar Sadath publicly lashes out at top cop
Kochi: Kunnathunad MLA Anwar Sadath on Tuesday lashed out at Ernakulam rural police chief A.V. George in his presence at a public function at Aluva in connection with the alleged custodial torture of a Dalit youth. The MLA alleged that Mr George took no interest in looking into his complaint against the Chengamanad circle inspector for behaving badly while he took up the issue a few months back. He further claimed the top officer denied permission to use the mike during a protest march held to the police station.
“If this is how the police treat an elected representative, I can imagine the plight of the common man,” he said in the presence of Ernakulam range inspector general P. Vijayan. “I’m sure there will be no improvement in the law and order situation in the Aluva region under such a police officer. The government should see that such police officers don’t cross their limit.” The unexpected criticism of the top cop by the Congress MLA came during the regional level inauguration and seminar of the ‘Janamythri Police’ initiative. The organisers had invited the MLA after Ports Minister Kadannappaly Ramachandran informed them of his unavailability at the last moment. Mr Vijayan later sought an explanation from Mr George based on a complaint of the MLA.
