K M Mani to celebrate Mercy Day'

KM Mani is likely to be announcing the future course of action by the party today.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Congress (M) is celebrating ‘Karunya Day’ across the state to mark party chairman K. M. Mani’s 84th birthday. Mr Mani will celebrate the day at a destitute home near Arppokkara in Kottayam along with family members. Mr Jose K. Mani, MP, told DC that KC (M) had identified 1000 destitute homes, orphanages, palliative centres and children’s homes across the state where 65, 000 inmates would be provided either food or cloth. He claimed that this was the first time a political party organized such a programme simultaneously from 12 pm to 2 pm across the state.

“While Mr Mani was the finance minister in the UDF ministry, he had sanctioned Rs 1,260 crore towards Karunya benevolent scheme. The majority of the beneficiaries were suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Also, he has been in the public arena for more than five decades which we want to commemorate this day”, he added. When DC asked Jose K. Mani whether his father still rues the day he had to step down from the Chandy government and if the controversy could have been avoided, he laughed it off.

Meanwhile on the eve of birthday, Mr Mani was busy receiving advance birthday greetings from well-wishers. Mr Mani might announce his future course of action on Sunday. But no political announcements are expected, he said. But DC has learnt that a section of KC (M) leaders has been objecting to Jose Mani being elevated in the party.
