Kozhikode: Foundation stone laid for new district library block
KOZHIKODE: Minister for public works G. Sudhakaran laid the foundation stone for the new building of the District central library situated in the premises of Government LP School, Kiliyanadu, near Malabar Christian College on Sunday. The new library complex will replace the old library in the premises that has been in need of renovation for years due to its dilapidated condition. The new building complex will cost Rs 1.65 crore to be allocated from MLA A. Pradeep Kumar’s asset development fund.
This old library premises also had a small museum in memory of noted writer Uroob, which was also in a dilapidated condition. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said, “The reading habit in the coming generations will never die when we develop these libraries and put before them a wide opportunity to read the best of works penned by noted writers”. Similar libraries would come up in every District of the State, thereby promoting the reading habit and inculcate a literature culture in the District, he added. “Our aim is to complete the works of the library within eight months and open it to the public”, said MLA A. Pradeep Kumar.
The plan is to develop the library as the centre for creative discussions including e-reading besides the usual method of reading from a hard copy. The modern digital library will also have a language lab and Braille library. “On an average, 1200 members are coming to this library and are struggling here without proper facilities. The new building will be a boon,” he added.
