Kochi: CCTV cameras for better road safety

According to police, nearly 10 fatal accidents are being reported along the Container Road stretch every month.

Kochi: With mishaps along the Seaport-airport and the Container roads rising, the Kalamassery Municipality has initiated a safety campaign that includes setting up of CCTV cameras and warning boards in three languages at regular intervals in the stretch under it. “Our aim is to cut the mishaps drastically in 2017. We’ll start with setting up of warning boards against speeding at regular intervals in both the roads coming under out jurisdiction. Besides Malayalam and English the message will also be displayed in Tamil for the benefit of Ayyappa pilgrims using the stretch,” Kalamassery municipal chairperson Jessy Peter said.

Further a letter was handed over to the district collector the other day seeking help in installing speed cameras and also banning illegal parking of container lorries. He promised to take action for setting up CCTVs on a priority,” she said. A weekly awareness campaign is also planned aimed at school and college students initially. “Weekly classes will be held at schools and colleges to make the students not to indulge in overspeeding and helmetless driving among others. Autodrivers and bus drivers are also planned to be covered at a later stage,” she said.

The municipality is also readying a well-equipped ambulance to be stationed at the primary health centre near HMT Junction to be deployed in emergency situation. According to police, nearly 10 fatal accidents are being reported along the Container Road stretch every month. The last one was reported on November 23 when a youth riding a two-wheeler was killed after he rammed his bike into a median divider in the absence of streetlights.
