Fly in Osmania biscuit prompts fine and stock seizure

Hyderabad: Almost two months after a customer discovered a fly baked into his packet of Osmania biscuits, the manufacturer, S. Rudra Foods, has been fined and the stocks seized. The GHMC assistant food controller confirmed that a fine of Rs 15,000 was imposed on S. Rudra Foods and stock worth Rs 80,000 was seized from the premises.

City resident Vinay Vangala had found the fly in a packet of biscuits that he had purchased on September 2. He had consumed nearly half of the packet when he found the fly embedded in a biscuit. He promptly lodged a complaint with the local food inspector and the food safety commissioner.

An adjudication case was filed in the Rangareddy district collectorate and heard earlier this week following which action was taken.

The manufacturer, based in Jalpally, had displayed a certificate from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on the packet.
