One died, 197 fell sick after drinking contaminated water in Belagavi

BELAGAVI: One person died and 197 people developed health issues in Mudenur village in Ramdurg Taluk after consuming contaminated water. The health department team led by the District Health Officer is stationed in the village to test the people and take preventive measures.

According to sources, the problem began after the sewage allegedly got mixed up with the drinking water.

Shivappa (70) who had developed health problem was admitted to hospital but died on Wednesday. District in-charge minister Govind Karjol has declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family member of Shivappa.

“Chief Minister has agreed to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Shivappa’s family. The health condition of others are stable and they are provided necessary treatment. The health officials have said that there is no need to panic,” Karjol said.

“Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants have been installed to provide safe water to the villagers. People should drink water from these RO plants and not from borewells. Under Jal Jeevan Mission every house will be provided piped water. About 80 percent work is completed. Steps will be taken to provide safe water to every household within a month,” he assured.

After people complained of problems like vomiting and diarrhea, a health team led by DHO is now stationed in the village.

“Our team comprises health department officials and ASHA workers. We are treating the villagers and taking preventive measures. The ASHA workers visit every house and check if people have any health issues,” DHO Dr Mahesh Koni told Deccan Chronicle.

While 95 people had reported health issues on Oct 25, 65 cases were reported on Oct 26 and 38 on Oct 27.

In the last three days, people with minor health issues are provided essential treatment in the village. Meanwhile, 36 patients who had some serious issues were referred to the hospitals. Officials have also tested the five water sources of the village.

Health officials will continue to be in the village for a few more days.
