THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has formed a special police squad to curb the increasing activities of goonda mafias in the state as announced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan the other day. State police chief Loknath Behera said that the special squad to be headed by an SP-level officer will have members in all districts. The squad will work in coordination with the local police and collect information regarding quotation gangs, sex rackets and other anti-social elements, register cases and initiate action against them.
The members of the squad will be finalised soon, said the statement. The Kochi city police has already formed a special squad named ‘city task force.’ The first case initiated by the team was against a CPM leader for threatening a businessman. Goonda activities were becoming rampant in the state over the last couple months with the state capital also witnessing a series of gang wars. Mr Pinarayi Vijayan had said that there would not be any political protection to anyone involved in criminal activities.
