Hyderabad: Family alleges negligence after man dies post operation
Hyderabad: A rare case of IVC cancer led to the post-operative death of 38-year-old K. Yadaiah whose family members have alleged medical negligence. A police case has been registered at Ramgopalpet police station. Yadaiah was undergoing treatment at Sunshine Hospital, Secunderabad. Hospital authorities say that they had told the patient’s relatives that it was a high-risk case and there could be an on-table death, post-operative death or a very long period of ventilator support if the patient survived 72 hours.
IVC scaroma is a tumour below the heart. In Yadaiah’s case it covered the liver and the right kidney, doctors said. The size of the tumour was that of a football.
The hospital stated that from 1871 to 1996 only 200 such cases had been reported worldwide. From 1996 to 2016, 22 cases had been reported where surgical interventions were done and survival rate was 25 per cent. The hospital said the challenging surgery involving five surgeons was taken up due to the young age of Yadaiah.
Ramgopalpet S-I K. Pratap Reddy said the police had collected medical documents and sent the body for post-mortem. But the patient bled and despite 12 units of blood being transfused, bleeding did not stop. The patient was diagnosed with the cancer one-and-a-half years ago but no hospital was willing to take up the case.
Ramgopalpet sub-inspector K. Pratap Reddy said the police had collected medical documents and the body had been sent for post-mortem. The reports will be forwarded to the medical board, he said/ Ramgopalpet police registered a case under section 304(a) and further investigation is underway.
