Tangedco panel to talk with workers
Chennai: Tangedco has formed a committee to hold talks with the protesting workers of the Ennore Thermal Power station against the plan to decommission the 45-year-old the plant by March next year.
The workers of Tangedco have been protesting since mid-August against the Tangedco's decision to decommission the 450 MW plant from March 31, 2016 to enable setting up of a 660 MW super critical Ennore replacement project.
The workers have been demanding continuous operation of the existing power plant until the commissioning of another 660 mw Ennore expansion power project whose construction work was underway.
They also wanted the utility management to hold talks with the union before deciding on the date for decommissioning of the plant. Following the continuous protest, Tangedco CMD formed a five- member committee headed by the director generation to hold talks with the trade unions to sort out the issues aroused due to the plant's decommissioning.
The Ennore thermal plant comprises two 60 MW and three 110 MW units, which were commissioned between 1970 and 1975. Already, Tangedco had decommissioned fifth unit of 110-MW capacity bringing down the operating capacity to 340 MW.
