Medical Council of India to extend MBBS admission time

Government gets breather, need not complete the process in haste.

Thiruvananthapuram: With the Medical Council of India planning to extend the deadline for MBBS admissions from August 30 to September 10, the state government hopes to get more time to complete the process. However, any decision to extend the deadline needs the Supreme Court approval. Sources said that the plan was to seek another round of counselling for the self-financing medical colleges. At present, the state government would get only one round of allotment for the self-financing colleges. It may even approach the Supreme Court for another round of counselling, sources said.

The first round of counselling that began on July 16 was restricted to government medical and dental colleges because the High Court verdict on the fees for self-financing medical colleges was delivered only on July 17 in the case filed by private self-financing colleges challenging the fee fixed by the fee regulatory commission. The second round of counselling for the state quota as per the schedule published by the MCI on the basis of the Supreme Court verdict will be held between August 8 and 19. Apart from government medical colleges, admissions will be held in self-financing medical colleges in this round.

As per this schedule, the state quota allotment could not be held ahead of the second round of counselling for the national quota. If another round of counselling is not approved, the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has to hurry through the spot admission process to ensure that all seats in management quota and government quota in self-financing colleges medical and dental courses are completed before August 30. Some seats may remain vacant if another round is not allowed by the MCI.
