Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday ordered sanctioning of Rs 9.5 lakh for three persons belonging to Tamil Nadu, two of whom had been awarded death sentence and one life imprisonment in a murder case in Qatar, to facilitate an appeal in the Supreme Court of that country.
Three Tamils, Alagappa Subramani from Pudukottai district, Chellathurai Perumal from Virudhunagar district and Sivakumar Arasan from Salem, were charged with murdering a woman. They had been imprisoned in Qatar since February 2012. They were awarded death sentence in a lower court and they appealed in the Qatar high court against the lower court judgment.
The high court confirmed the death sentence for Alagappa Subramani and Chellathurai Perumal, while commuting the death sentence for Sivakumar Arasan to life imprisonment.
The Indian embassy officials had arranged for a meeting of lawyers with the three Tamils. The advocates had told the officials that Rs 9.5 lakh would be needed for them for an immediate appeal in the Supreme Court.
The details had been conveyed to Tamil Nadu government and the embassy had requested to grant Rs 9.5 lakh immediately. Rajammal, wife of Chellathurai Perumal, had requested Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for financial assistance to appeal in the case.
The Chief Minister ordered that the required money be sent to the Indian embassy at Qatar to ensure that three Tamils appeal in the Supreme Court of Qatar, an official press release here said.
