Plea to implede top cleric in Kannur land fraud case

The verdict on the fresh plea will be issued on July 1.

KANNUR: A petition was filed at Thalassery Vigilance court on Monday to include Sunni scholar Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Muzaliyar in the list of respondents in the land transaction in Ancharakkandy, 15 km from here, where a 300-acre estate was allegedly converted into ‘Micha Bhoomi (surplus land).’ The plea was filed by Mr A.K. Shaji from Iritty. The verdict on the fresh plea will be issued on July 1.

According to Mr Shaji, the estate land was bought by Kanthapuram in 2000, which contained Karuppa trees and an archaeologically-significant building believed to have been used by Herman Gundert. He handed over the land with power of attorney to Jabbar Haji, a business man, in 2001 who registered the land under his and his minor sons’ name in 2003-04.

The registrar, village officer and panchayat secretary had not complied with rules while registering the deal as surplus land, which has historic significance. It is believed that the first registration procedures in the state were done for the building in the land which was constructed in 1867. Mr Jabbar Haji is the chairman of Kannur Medical College set up in the 300-acre land and the waste from the medical college pollutes the river on its other side, said Mr Shaji.

According to an earlier petition filed by Mr Shaji on February 21, the registrar, village officer and panchayat secretary were named as respondents, along with the Sunni scholar. Mr Shaji says that Kanthapuram was included neither in the FIR nor in the investigation report. “The reports show that the statement of the scholar was not recorded and there are chances that the case might get sabotaged,” Mr Shaji said.
