University College parents protest
Thiruvananthapuram: Parents registered their strong protest with the University College authorities here on Monday over the lawlessness prevailing on the campus, seriously affecting studies of their wards.
The venue was the parent-teacher association meeting, convened by the Director of Collegiate Education on the direction of the Higher Education Minister to report issues that led to the suicide bid by an undergrad female student.
There was no solution in sight to issues thrown up by the hapless survivor, who penned a note about the harassment she had to suffer at the hands of the college union office-bearers, led by the SFI.
Embarrassed by her own extreme reaction, the student had sought a transfer to another college.
Parents told the authorities that they had enrolled their children at the college considering its prestigious status, but the fact was that the atmosphere at the college was vitiated and there was no room for any worthwhile academic exercise.
"Students are often summoned by union leaders and taken out of the class and we have no clue where they are being taken during class hours", was the refrain at the meeting.
The director of collegiate education is expected to give a report to the Higher Education Minister, stating the ground realities at the University College.
