West Kochi to get more water

Pipeline laying works complete.

KOCHI: The parched areas in west Kochi will get an additional 15 million litres of drinking water as the new pipeline laying works have been completed and ready for commissioning. The project will be commissioned soon after completing the safety inspection and trial run. At present 25 million litres of water is supplied to Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and nearby areas. High quality pipelines have been laid along 2.8 kilometres from Willingdon Island to Karuvelipady pump house at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore. More than one and half lakh people from 50,000 families will benefit from the project, said district collector K. Muhammad Y. Safirulla.

Water from the Kerala Water Authority’s Maradu treatment plant will be supplied through the new pipelines. The pipeline laying works which was stuck for several reasons has been revived by the district administration as part of drought relief measures. Delay in getting permission from the Public Works Department and the City Corporation for road cutting has delayed the pipeline laying. With the commissioning of the project, west Kochi areas’ dependence on water from KWA Aluva pump house will be minimized.
