Kerala: No big dip in Khadi sales
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After LDF victory in the recent Assembly polls, many wondered whether the departure of the Congress led UDF Government would lead to dip in khadi sales. DC spoke to the leading khadi and linen traders of the city to find out how the change would affect them.
Vijayakumar, an employee of Khadi Sarvodaya Sangh showroom at MG road, said there was slight drop in sales of white khadi whenever the Congress government moves out of office. He said there are takers for khadi even among the left leaders. Many who came for the swearing in ceremony had purchased Khadi materials from the shop.
“It is not just the congressmen who use khadi nowadays, the weather has made khadi acceptable to everyone. LDF leaders including A Sampath MP, ministers Mathew T Thomas, and Kadannappally Ramachandran are regulars," said an official.
Khadi material in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 1200 is mainly sold from the outlet. The showroom which was established in 1982 was renovated recently and offers a good selection for the classic-fabric lovers. Linen Club situated at Pattom is another textile hub for the politicians of the city.
The employees there are doubtful how the change would affect them as the showroom is just three years old. Abdul Salam, who handles accounts there said that the number of linen-users among politicians have gone up. “Those who have experimented linen have now become our regular customers,” he said.
