Man hit by earth-moving machine dies in Kochi

The deceased was identified as Rajan, 55, of Kuruppampady.

Kochi: A man who was laying water pipes along the Kizhakkambalam-Perumbavur road was killed when he was hit by an earth-moving machine on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Rajan, 55, of Kuruppampady. According to cops, the mishap occurred at 5.30 a.m. when Rajan, who was laying the Kerala Water Authority pipe, entered into a pit dug for the purpose.

Suddenly, an earth-mover operating nearby turned towards the pit and accidentally hit Rajan from behind. In the impact, he fell into the pit even as debris along with loose soil began falling on him. Though the other workers rushed in, he could be extricated only 15 minutes later with the help of fire and rescue personnel.

Rajan was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. Kunnathunadu police booked a case against Sabu, who operated the earth mover, under IPC 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
