Kerala: Heritage museum at Karyavattom campus

The university has roped in Kerala Police Housing Construction Corporation for executing the Rs 18-crore project.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The much-hyped project of Heritage Museum and Chancellor’s Multiplex on the Karyavattom campus of the Kerala University is all set to take off.

The university has roped in Kerala Police Housing Construction Corporation for executing the Rs 18-crore project.

An official said that the soil test by the geology department of the College of Engineering Trivandrum is underway to design the foundation of the structure, which will complete soon.

The university received `5 crore as prize money of the first Chancellor’s Award.

The proposed centre will include a heritage museum and a multidisciplinary research centre. The multiplex will have digital theatre, digital conference room, digital information centre, learner ecosystem with a 72" LCD, technology business incubation centre and waiting rooms for parents and women.

It was one of the proposals submitted to KIIFB for funding to raise the university to an international centre of excellence in academics and research.

However, according to officials, funding would be a serious concern. “The fund earmarked will not be enough, despite the budgetary allocation. The available funds would only be adequate for the construction of the Centre block,” said an official.

“If funds are available, it would be ready in 18 months. We are unable to invite tenders because of the election code of conduct is in force. So we have to wait until June.”
