Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to be declared Open Defecation Free

Work on 4,268 individual toilets will be completed by Tuesday as part of Swachh Bharat Mission.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram will be declared an open defecation-free Corporation by LSGD Minister K.T. Jaleel on Tuesday. Addressing the media on Monday, Mayor V.K. Prasanth said that work on 3,900 toilets has been completed. Work on 4,268 individual toilets will be completed by Tuesday as part of Swachh Bharat Mission. For each toilet, the central government doled out Rs 4,000, while the state contributed Rs 1,333 and the Corporation paid Rs 10,067.

Corporation had employed the services of Kudumbashree members to conduct a survey in every ward, to identify which households needed toilets. Health wing officials later followed it up, to confirm the number of toilets needed to be constructed. At 1,262, Vizhinjam had the most number of beneficiaries. Earlier the Adani group had promised to build toilets here as part of its Corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities at Vizhinjam harbour.
