KOZHIKODE: More than 100 food kits were distributed among needy people at the railway station in Kozhikode on Sunday by believers of Infant Jesus church, Asokapuram. The project, started on Easter Day as ‘Year of Mercy’, would continue in the coming weeks, said church priest Fr Wilson Mathew. A group of youngsters belonging to the church will take the census of the needy people including beggars as well as security personnel who are working for a meagre salary.
Once the exact number of needy people is arrived at, the food distribution will continue on every Sundays in the first phase. Youngsters would be given charge of distribution, said Fr Wilson Mathew. The food kit distribution started at around 11.45 am and covered 102 people around the railway station premises.
Around 11 youngsters and four elderly persons took part in the food kit distribution. The areas identified for distribution of food kits are Chinthavalappu, beneath the flyover in Arayidathupalam, mofussil stand and KSRTC new terminal.
After getting the exact number of needy people, the weekly distribution of food kits would be extended to seven days a week, said Fr Wilson. The funds for the distribution of food kits will come purely through donations. Food kits including biriyani and non-vegetarian meals are prepared at discounted rates by
the same person, who prepares food for church activities.
