Kerala: Left culturati mum on ABVP violence

Writer NS Madhavan was the only prominent voice in her support from the state.

Kochi: The pro-left hyperactive Facebook warriors in Kerala are mostly silent on the ABVP violence against students and faculty members of Ramjas College of the Delhi University, and the subsequent hate mail campaign against a student, Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of Captain Mandeep Singh martyred in the Kargil War. Writer NS Madhavan was the only prominent voice in her support from the state. "With a helmet on his head and every organ of his body padded, still his bat didn’t face bullets,” he said on Twitter with the hashtag #donotmockdeadsolider.

The writer was referring to cricketer Virender Sehwag mocking the DU girl for her bold stand against the ABVP. Ms Kaur, a student of the Lady Sri Ram College, posted a picture with a placard, hashtagged #StudentsAgainstABVP. Her words, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). I am not alone. Every student of India is with me,” invited the wrath of ABVP activists.

The SFI and AISF leaders in the state are conspicuous by their lack of interest in the incident which has triggered widespread protest on social media and solidarity buildup. The supporters of the fringe left groups were more active on the issue compared with the established left student groups, said a social media observer. The people who raised the hue and cry over some students burning the chair of Maharaja’s College principal are also silent.
